People often ask us, "What does a pet care professional actually do all day?" The short answer: a lot more than just walking dogs. Every day is different — and that's exactly what makes this job so rewarding. Here's a look at a typical day in the life of the Walk This Way Pet Care team.
6:30 AM — Rise and Shine
The day starts early. While most of Richmond is still hitting snooze, our team is already on the road. Morning visits are some of our busiest — puppies need to be let out, senior dogs need their medication, and cats are demanding breakfast like they haven't eaten in weeks.
We check our schedules on our app, review any special notes from pet parents, and head to our first visit. Every pet has a detailed care plan that we follow — feeding instructions, medication schedules, favorite walking routes, and even which toy they prefer for playtime.
Morning Checklist
- ✓ Let dogs out for potty break & fresh water refill
- ✓ Administer any morning medications
- ✓ Breakfast service per each pet's dietary plan
- ✓ Quick tidy-up: accidents happen overnight!
- ✓ Send update & photo to pet parents
9:00 AM — Adventure Walks
Mid-morning is adventure walk time. This isn't a quick lap around the block — we take dogs on real hikes through places like Pocahontas State Park, James River trails, and Deep Run Park. These 45-60 minute walks give high-energy dogs the exercise and mental stimulation they need.
We rotate through different trails to keep things interesting. One day might be a riverside path, the next a shaded woodland route. Dogs thrive on the variety — new smells, different terrain, and the chance to be a dog in nature. And honestly? We love it just as much as they do.
12:00 PM — Midday Check-Ins
Lunchtime means a second round of visits. Puppies who can't hold it all day get a potty break and play session. Cats get some midday attention (on their terms, of course). Senior dogs get a gentle stroll and maybe some extra ear scratches.
This is also when we handle the little extras: bringing in packages left on doorsteps, watering plants if asked, rotating lights for security, and sending midday photo updates so pet parents can see their furry family is happy and safe.
The Photo Update
Every visit comes with a photo and note. We capture the happy tail wags, the silly faces, the peaceful naps — pet parents tell us these updates are the highlight of their workday. It's our way of saying "your pup is in great hands."
3:00 PM — Afternoon Adventures & Training
The afternoon brings a second wave of adventure walks and enrichment visits. For dogs working on training goals — loose-leash walking, recall, impulse control — we incorporate training into every outing. A walk isn't just a walk; it's an opportunity to practice good manners.
We also squeeze in enrichment activities: puzzle feeders, nose work games, and confidence-building exercises. A mentally tired dog is a happy dog, and these activities are especially valuable for dogs who can't go on long physical walks due to age or health.
6:00 PM — Evening Wind-Down
Evening visits are our favorite. The pace slows down, the light gets golden, and there's something special about those end-of-day walks. Dogs get their dinner, a final potty break, and some quality snuggle time before their owners come home.
For pet-sitting clients whose families are away, we also handle the nighttime routine: closing blinds, turning on a light or TV for comfort, double-checking water bowls, and making sure everyone is cozy for the night.
What Makes It All Worth It
By the end of a typical day, we've driven across multiple counties, walked miles of trail, handled countless leashes, dispensed medications, sent dozens of photos, and given more belly rubs than we can count. We come home tired — the good kind of tired.
But here's what makes it all worth it: the excited wiggle when a dog sees us pull into the driveway. The purr of a cat who's decided we're okay. The relief on a pet parent's face when they see that photo update and know their best friend is happy, safe, and loved.
